John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson, New York, was founded under the will of John Titus Mather, a Port Jefferson shipbuilder who died in 1928 and asked that a non-sectarian charitable hospital be built in the village. It opened on December 29, 1929, with 54 beds as the first general hospital in the Town of Brookhaven. Today Mather Hospital, a member of Northwell Health, is an accredited 249-bed non-profit community teaching hospital, and gifts to it and its JTM Foundation, including its raffles, stay at Mather to support patient care.
