Helping Seniors of Brevard is a grassroots nonprofit in Satellite Beach, Florida, founded by retired Navy Captain Joe Steckler to advocate, educate and fundraise for seniors and their caregivers in Brevard County. The idea grew from a 1997 promise by a friend, a retired Army colonel who had seen the liberation of Dachau, to give $50 a month for life if Joe would start a program for seniors in need, and the group was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) in August 2011. Its free Helping Seniors Info Line connects callers with help on housing, transportation, health, Medicare and Medicaid, veterans’ needs, meals, and financial and legal issues.
