The new home of health care for the region’s children took another step toward opening today as a 51-foot-long sign reading “Niswonger Children’s Hospital” was placed on the front of the soon-to-open pediatric care facility on the campus of Johnson City Medical Center (JCMC). The $36 million Niswonger Children’s Hospital has been under construction for the last two years to replace The Children’s Hospital on JCMC’s fourth floor where many pediatric subspecialties have been offered since the early 1990s.
“With the sign finally going above the doors, it makes the opening of Niswonger Children’s Hospital seem like a reality,” said Lisa Smithgall, Vice President for Women’s and Children’s Services at Mountain StatesHealth Alliance, the parent company to JCMC. “I’m so proud of the work that has gone into this beautiful facility and the impact it will make on children’s health care for our entire region.”
The multi-colored sign reflects the whimsical atmosphere that the hospital’s namesakes, Scott and Nikki Niswonger, said they wanted to see in the facility. When announcing their $10 million donation to the hospital, the Greeneville couple said they wanted Niswonger Children’s Hospital to have an appearance that would alleviate fears and make children want to enter.
Primary construction of the hospital is expected to be completed by the end of the year and will be open to patients in March. (To see photos of the construction click right here.)
