Raffle Benefits
The Florida FCAT test measures students in reading, writing, mathematics and science. Students must reach certain benchmarks in each of the disciplines in order to receive a high school diploma. However, many Florida students are struggling to meet their benchmarks and schools are being graded poorly. Operation Empowerment is working in local schools to alleviate some of this test anxiety by bringing our unique writing program to students and schools at no cost.
We have already served over 600 students this year. Our success is in the numbers. Having served at LLT Academy (Tampa) and East Bay High School (Gibsonton), Operation Empowerment helped to raise average FCAT writing scores at LLT Academy from 3.9 last year to a 4.8 this year. This was a phenomenal gain in writing for this charter school, moving them to the top in the state and district. Serving over 500 students at East Bay High School, we helped to bring up average school scores from a 3.8 to a 4.0. We are extremely proud of our ESOL students (English as a second language) at East Bay High School. These juniors and seniors have previously been unsuccessful in meeting the writing benchmark to graduate. They are held to the same standards of writing as our native speaking students are held. Some of these students have only been speaking English for a very short time. Through participation in our program, we are extremely proud to say that 90% of our ESOL participants passed the retake benchmark this year. Currently, we are serving in four Hillsborough County schools: Blake High School, North Tampa Alternative, LLT Academy Middle School and LLT Academy High School. By year’s end we will have served over 1100 students.
