What kind of Vehicle
should you raffle?
Your organization is looking to hold a vehicle
raffle. Fantastic! Now, what are you going to raffle off? An old Mustang?
A new LandRover LR3? A fishing boat? A combine? There are many different
popular raffle choices out there to consider.
- The Classic
Car – Everyone loves an old or classic car! Corvettes of any year
always seem to do well. Muscle cars from the late 60’s and ‘70s are
a hit too – Mustangs, Camaro’s, GTO’s and so on. If it looks good
and goes fast (or looks like it goes fast) you’ve got a winner. These
days Classic Cars are hugely popular. With TV shows such as the Barrett
Jackson Auction interest in vintage and classic cars is really running
high. Really any old car is going to peak interest as long as it is
in reasonably good, running condition. Focus on something that your
potential winner can drive on a daily or weekend basis and have fun
doing so. Go for a popular model year, interesting, fast (looking)
and fun car.
- The New Car Raffle – Who wouldn’t like a chance
at a new car for a $10, $20 or $50 dollar raffle ticket? A newer car
is also potentially easier to find but could end up costing you more.
Set up a meeting with a local auto dealer to see what is involved.
-
The Motorcycle Raffle – Roaring down the road on a big bike with the
wind in your face is a daily occurrence for some, a daydream for many.
A lot of people out there love the idea of owning a motorcycle but
can’t bring themselves to actually purchase one for whatever reason
(too expensive for a weekend toy, can only ride 5 months a year, etc).
But! People will drop a few bucks on the chance of winning one and
fulfilling a longtime dream! Harley-Davidson motorcycles are always
a hit. To find a local Harley dealer check out their main website
at Harley-Davidson.com.
- The Practical Raffle Vehicle - Are
you holding a raffle in a highly agricultural area? Perhaps a good
new piece of farm equipment or a tractor will bring out the ticket
buyers. If it is something that can be of real use to your potential
ticket buyers (customers!) then this may be the way to go. (see also
the Work Truck Raffle below)
- The “Geographically Correct” Raffle
- Live in the Snow Belt? How about a pair of snowmobiles! Live on
the coast or on a lake? How about a ski boat or a pair of jet ski’s!
Live around a bunch of large ranches or farms? How about a couple
of 4 wheelers! Live by a swamp? How about an Airboat! See what I’m
getting at?
- The Work Truck Raffle – Every town and city in
the nation depends on men and women who work hard for a living. Electricians,
Plumbers, Landscapers, Painters, Framers, Carpenters, Contractors,
Sheetrockers, Excavators, Masons, Roofers, Welders, Steel Workers,
and so on live and work everywhere, including your town. And what
do all of these various professions have in common? They need a truck.
They need a good truck with a tow package, plenty of tool box space,
a cell phone charger jack and a coffee cup holder.
- The RV Raffle
– Have you seen a new RV lately? These things are amazing. Talk about
cruising the road with style! With the Baby Boomer generation just
starting to hit retirement they are not looking to spend their twilight
years on the couch. RV sales are booming and interest is high! Depending
on where you get the motor home from this could be one of your more
expensive raffles. New “Class A RV’s” can start around $100,000 and
go way up from there. Contact a local RV dealer and see what you can
work out. (See some National R.V. site links to the right to find
a local dealer)
- The Lease Raffle – This is a raffle type that
is gaining popularity. Instead of raffling off a car you actually
raffle a one, two or three year lease on one. To gain interest and
sell more tickets typically the lease is on a pretty nice car or truck
such as a Hummer 3, or a Cadillac. The cost is potentially lower not
only to your organization but also to your raffle winner as well.
- The Lawn Tractor Raffle – Just about everyone who cuts their
own yard would love a new tractor. The problem is people have a tough
time justifying the expense of a nice shiny new tractor when the one
they’ve had for 10 years still runs and does the job. A lot of folks
will lay down $10 or $15 for a chance at a new one however. To find
a local dealer for some of the best known national lawn mower brands
see the link's along the right side of this article.
These are
just a few ideas to get your creative juices flowing. If you have
had great success, or a disaster, with any of the above raffle types
I’d love to hear about it. Shoot me an email! Or if you’ve been involved
in a sucessful raffle type not listed above tell me about it and I’ll
add it too the list.
- In the next article or two we’ll discuss
how to go about finding these vehicles and get them donated or at
least go for a for a steep discount.
Thanks for the time and
good luck!
